Let’s connect back into community to hear and learn from each other.
In a recent post, I wrote about the attention economy and how it’s objective is to take our attention away from the things that help make us feel whole, present, and alive.
After many years of dissociation and going through the motions, so much of my work in this world is dedicated to supporting myself and others feel more alive and present in their bodies so we can bring our unique gifts into the world. Back when I started this journey (around 10 years ago now), I came across a quote that has been a guiding light for me:
“Don’t ask what the world needs. Ask what makes you come alive, and go do it. Because what the world needs is people who have come alive.” -Howard Thurman
So for today’s Thursday Thread, I’m wondering…
What makes you come alive?
What people, places, or things help you feel more whole? How do you know when you feel more alive? It can be as subtle as drinking more water, or as big as seeing the impact your work is making in the world (and everything in-between!).
So here’s the deal. In the comments section below:
introduce yourself and where you’re from
tell us about what in this world makes you come alive?
Then…
Comment on another person’s post that resonates with you. Let them know that you see them, in your own special and unique way.
*I’ll be moderating posts. I might not respond to all of them, but I will definitely be reading and reflecting on everything you share.
-Tell us what makes you come alive. It can be anything!
THEN...
-comment on another person's post that resonates with you. Let them know that you see them, in your own special and unique way!
This is a great opportunity to share, connect, and get curious about where you are placing your attention. I'll be posting threads like these more regularly for all subscribers as a way to support reflection and authentic expression.
I'll go first!
Recently what makes me feel alive is the smell of the earth after a light spring rain. The smell of my dog's cheek. Watching the flowers I buy at Trader Joe's every week blossom in the vase next to my desk. Connecting back into the 15 day practice community after what felt like month's away.
I read recently that a stacker here received wisdom from her therapist to buy herself flowers every time she sees them. I loved this idea and bought some TJ florals this week too. 🥹✨
My name is Kyleigh and I’m from the east coast. I left my regular 9 to 5 desk job to pursue my passions and haven’t looked back since. I am a hard worker and put my heart and soul into all that I do. I often felt stagnant and uninspired putting effort into jobs where I could see and feel the impact. I now own an AAU basketball program where I get to positively impact the youth in my community through sports. It lights my soul on fire to watch my kids thrive on the court, build lifelong friendships and learn invaluable lessons through their athletic experiences. We dedicate most of the hours in our week to our job, and I feel most alive when mine reflects my passions and allows me to make a visible, positive impact on others.
Hi Everyone! I’m writing from Vancouver, BC. For me, getting creative in the kitchen cooking for myself and others brings me great joy and aliveness. Cooking is one of my only creative outlets and I cherish my time in the kitchen. Excited to hear what brings you all alive! Cheers
I wish I felt as confident in the kitchen. I feel like I’m often trying recipes that fall flat, which leaves me pretty discouraged. Would love to hear a couple of your favorites.
I feel you, Rose. Some recipes are so complicated that it makes it hard to get excited. My go-to food blogs are cookie and Kate, minimalist baker, and if I’m craving more comfort half-baked harvest
I’m Rose, and I’m from Ohio. Right now, there’s a lovely thunderstorm outside, and I just pulled a homemade cherry pie out of the oven for pi day — both of which are making me come alive. 🥧🍒
I also love the feeling of getting into a good book and finding my own flow with writing on my own Substack and on my other creative writing.
I love this question…as I hit a huge burnout and I’m finding that an inner heart centered way of living is really the only sustainable way. Walking and hiking with my camera and exploring lights me up…then reviewing the photos and making art with them. And getting a boba tea!🧋 😊
I deeply appreciate this question- it’s too easy to forget about the simple things.
My son is 3. His name is August, and like a lot of toddlers- he loves Monster Trucks. We found one that looks like a Unicorn called “Sparkle Smash”. Watching him sparkle while we race the cars around the couch really just does it for me. Every time.
I am learning how to feel fulfilled in Activites outside of motherhood, so I’ll also add that watching the clouds (especially at sunset) definitely stirs up some life in me. 🌅
Thank you for this beautiful space, I’ve officially decided that substack people are the best people.
Hi ! I'm Morgane, French living in Copenhagen. Love your substack! After a near death experience last year, the little things make me come alive, my children red-cheeks and smiley face in the morning, the sound of rain on the windows, the feel of sun on my face, the feel of sand under my feet... all the little things that realle aren't so little. Thanks for that lovely post and idea!

Love this Kyleigh. So happy to hear you’ve been able to find something that is not just a job but a passion as well🙌🏼
Kyleigh - WOW!! Talk about living in your purpose. Thank you for sharing your story, it’s deeply inspiring to those of us striving to follow suit. 🦋

As someone who benefits from you’re cooking I can say it’s definitely made me come alive too !! 😊
Hi Jacob! I’m on my way to Vancouver for dinner now… no pressure 😂
Cheers from San Diego! 🥂

Hello- I just discovered you on Notes 😊

Hi🌹!
I made pi(e) today too!! Yours sounds better. Mine was store bought because unfortunately unlike Jacob here, I do not feel most alive when cooking. 😅
I love to read you feel most alive when you find your flow in reading/writing. I am just starting to understand what that feels like.
Wishing you a lovely rest of Pi Day!
Xx

Welcome Rose 💫 Looking forward to reading more from you on substack!
